Friday Movie Night

Friday Movie Night drawing

I found this poster hanging in the office/art room the other day. Friday Movie Night is the brainchild of Lucy Horbal, age seven. When asked in an interview why she decided to let me and my loving wife choose the first two screenings, she replied, “because me and my sister need to learn patience even though I don’t want to learn patience.” I’m planning to go with Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical for my inaugural selection in the spirit of the series themes of “family” and “cooperate” because although I haven’t seen it yet, everyone else has and they all like it.

Alice Horbal’s First Trip to a Movie Theater

When I took my eldest daughter Lucy see Frozen 2 in March, 2020, I never would have imagined that nearly two and a half years would pass before her next trip to a movie theater. With the whole family now fully vaccinated against COVID-19, we finally broke this dubious streak this evening with an outing to Cinemapolis for their 5pm screening of Marcel the Shell with Shoes On. Even more importantly, this was Lucy’s little sister Alice’s very first theatrical screening! Here’s a picture of her ticket stub for posterity:

We meant to document the occasion more thoroughly with photographs, but got caught in a downpour and spent quite a long time trying in vain to wait it out under an overhang on the Ithaca Commons. Eventually we just made a run for it. Here’s me and the girls a few minutes later:

Oof. That’s no good! Let’s try again:

Take two.

Nope, that’s not it either. Third time’s the charm?

Take three.

Eh, close enough. While my sister-in-law and I got concessions, the girls and their mom dried themselves off and had some fun with a mirror:

After the movie we stopped off at Franco’s to pick up a large cheese pizza and a Sicilian with pepperoni. Here’s Aunt Alison enjoying the latter:

Alice reports that she enjoyed the film, and when asked which part was her favorite said, “I liked all if it, because everything was funny!” Lucy agreed that some parts were funny, but also noted that “some parts were sad, and some parts were boring.” Both girls commented on the fact that the screen was bigger than our TV, and they finished off an entire large popcorn and soda pretty much by themselves. All in all, it was a successful, if somewhat damp, outing–hopefully we won’t wait nearly so long to do it again this time!

Lucy Horbal’s First Trip to a Movie Theater

I celebrated a great milestone in my life today when I took my daughter Lucy to her first movie theater screening! We went to see Frozen II together at Cornell Cinema as part of their IthaKid Film Festival. Here’s my ticket:

Lucy was napping when we arrived and needed a few minutes to wake up:

She was much more enthusiastic by the time we got to the lobby, though:

And by the time we loaded up with popcorn and Swedish fish, she and her plus one Comma (I love the fact that she named her doll Comma) were fully ready to go:

I’m happy to report that Lucy had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed the film! Her review is as follows: “my favorite part was the horse, because I like horses.”
